About Hola Lotería

Hola Lotería pays tribute to this part of Mexican culture by reimagining some of the original Lotería illustrations into a traditional deck of playing cards. Additional artwork has been included to highlight historical icons in Mexican history. For more information about these icons, visit the Inspired By page.

This project originated as a project for my graphic design program in 2014. Over the last 10 years, this project has seen a few different iterations. After some inspiration and reworking design elements and colors, I'm very excited to share this project with the world and our community.

This is my love letter to other Mexican-Americans like me. We were always taught US history—history that isn’t necessarily ours and only one part. A lot us grew up not knowing the heroes of our culture and the heroes of our ancestors. This is my way to honor all of it—the sacrfice and courage of our abuelos, our parents, and all the other gente aquí y allí.

What is Lotería?

Lotería, often referred to as “Mexican Bingo,” is an iconic version of bingo that uses colorful cards, each featuring an image with the name of the item at the bottom. Lotería adds a twist to this game — instead of calling out a number, the announcer recites a phrase, rhyme, or clue that corresponds to the image on the card. Each player has a different tabla (board) with a random selection of images and the first player to complete a line or pattern on their board wins.
